Sphere of Control and the Golden Circle

Where do you spend most of your time?  For many people in business leadership roles and in life, the Sphere of Control provides insight into this question. However what is equally important is the results from the Sphere of Control.  When watching and listening to a TED Talk, I realized the Golden Circle could help explain the results.

Think about your business leadership role. How much time do you spend on the far outer circle of  “What you cannot control.”  How much energy do you place into that circle?

Now think about those areas that you can influence. What can you do to influence those areas be it management or even sales?  This is a much smaller circle as it should be.  Additionally for many in business leadership roles not enough time is placed within this Sphere of Control circle.

Finally, think about “what you can truly control.” Why do you want to control whatever is happening in your business leadership role? The inner most circle is the smallest because the why of what we can truly control is only ourselves.

The Golden Circle was coined in a video by Simon Sinek in Start with Why. His Golden Circle reverses the how and the what, but the Why is still the smallest circle.  From my experiences with those in small business leadership roles when talking about their businesses, their points of differentiation, these individuals confuse the how of what they do with the what or results of what they do.

Yet, the Why and What I can control are:

  • Internal behaviors
  • Strong outcomes

The two outer circles in both the Sphere of Control and the Golden Circle are external behaviors and their outcomes become weaker the further away from the center, inner most circle.

To differentiate yourself in business leadership suggests you must Be the Red Jacket, the individual seen first and followed by others.  The person who achieves the results. Possibly by understanding the relationship between the Sphere of Control and your own Golden Circle, you may actually improve your small business results.

  • Loved the book “Start with Why”. Your post further emphasizes the need for business owners to spend time on the Why.

Reading your comments on control is a great reminder to not make excuses for that which we cannot control. Focus more on what we can control and WHY leads to a more productive day.

    Thanks, Leanne

  • Tom -”Start with Why” is invaluable as success does come from within. Glad to read the you found the connection with the Sphere of Control. So how do you think people can become more focused on the Why?
